MICROLOT SERIES: NANDI
We are delighted to introduce you to our next small-batch Microlot: Nandi
Background Story
Nyeri County lies on the western slope of the highest mountain in the country - Mt.Kenya (5199m). Due to the altitude (farms are located at 1280 - 1970 m.a.s.l.), fertile red volcanic soils and tropical climate, coffee from Nyeri is considered one of the best in Kenya, and the entire region is called "The Champagne Region of Coffee."
Despite this, for several years of the 21st century, Nyeri's coffee industry experienced stagnation for economic reasons. The coffee factory was revived in 2022. The factory had not operated for over a decade, but in a short span of less than a year, the factory was back into operations, having delivered about 19,000 kgs of cherries in their first year of operation.
Processing Method Used
Natural Process
Why is this coffee so special?
With sustainability in mind, the members decided to explore the concept of naturally processed coffee, a new approach as the previous method only involved producing pulped coffee. An additional advantage of this method was that it required no water for processing, as the water pumps and pulping facilities were still not operational.
They picked up the pieces and successfully made it through the 2021/2022 season, gaining valuable experience and learning how to handle naturally processed coffee. With the help of well-wishers, the cooperative was able to pay the farmers a decent price for the delivered coffee cherries.

MEET THE FARMERS
Moyee is in direct contact with more than 658 farmers who grow the cherries of the Single in Limu, Ethiopia. Coffee plants are at an altitude of more than 1,600 meters under the canopy of a natural coffee forest. From November until January, the ripe, red berries are picked by hand and processed at our own washing station.
MEET THE PROCESSING TEAM
Moyee has its own washing station in Limu. During the harvest, the FairChain farmers from the area bring their ripe, red berries here. The berries are washed and, for the best quality, dried slowly on the drying beds. To ensure our quality, the beans are then slowly dried on drying beds.
